Coal in Kenya: Factsheet

Kenya is a signatory to the 2015 Paris Agreement, committing the country to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 32% compared to a business as usual (BAU) scenario by 2030.

Yet, despite this commitment, the Kenyan Budget outlining the governments’ plans for Kenya’s Post-COVID recovery from June 2021, has allocated 1.3 billion shillings to the exploration and mining of coal for the next fiscal year.

This justifies local community group actions to oppose the development of a coal industry in Kenya.
