China’s Pledge to Stop Building Coal Plants Abroad Welcomed!

In June 2019, the National Environment Tribunal (NET) in Kenya issued a judgment cancelling the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license of the proposed Lamu coal plant – a project that was relying heavily on financial support from the Industrial Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). The 1,050MW Lamu coal plant was expected to be the largest in East Africa and first in Kenya. Therefore, this decision by the Chinese government snuffs out any lingering hope that the project would be revived as Amu Power had appealed the judgment.
