CS Environment, Prof Judi Wakhungu says Coal isn’t Clean
The Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Regional Development, Prof. Judi Wakhungu stated that coal isn’t clean contrary to previous government position and claims by the project proponents, Amu Power.
Those arguing against environmentalists opposing the projects have always maintained that the project will use clean coal technologies which will keep the environment safe. However, Prof. Wakhungu’s position which she has now aired publicly contradicts this claim.
“We in the environment are quite clear that coal is dirty. There is no such thing as clean coal,” stated Prof. Wakhungu while presiding over the opening of new offices for the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) in Mokowe, Lamu yesterday.
The below audio recording was obtained by #deCOALonize from Radio Rahma where she also stated in Swahili that the Ministry is supportive of renewable energy technologies. “Sisi kama Wizara wa Mazingira na Maliasli tungependa nchi yetu iendelee kutumia clean energy,” she stated.
The opening ceremony for the KEFRI centre was also attended by the Governor of Lamu, Issa Timamy, PS Lands Mariam Maawy, County Commissioner of Lamu, among many others.
