Dear Chairman Yi Huiman

Save Lamu is a network organization dedicated to achieving sustainable development while preserving the environmental, social and cultural integrity of the Lamu community.
We understand that you support the China’s Belt and Road Initiative. As such, we would like to notify you that we have sent a request for information to ICBC regarding their investment in the Lamu coal plant in Kenya.

This project has become extremely controversial in Kenya because of its failure to adequately and fully consult local communities, in addition to the well-known environmental and health impacts caused by coal consumption. As one of the first Belt and Road projects in Kenya, the Lamu coal plant has not been received well by the Kenyan and Lamu public, and so we hope that by informing you of our concerns, there may arise opportunities for Kenyan and Chinese stakeholders to collectively resolve and address concerns.
Please let us know if you have any suggestions on how to reach and communicate with ICBC. Our first letter to ICBC (sent in December 2016 and 2017) have gone unanswered, and so local communities are growing increasingly distressed about how Chinese coal investment may negatively impact their livelihoods and wellbeing.
Please contact us for any questions or information at any time at: savelamu@gmail.com. We would be happy to hear your feedback and suggestions on how we can work together

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Abubakar Mohamed Al- Amudy
Chairman, Save Lamu
